Where ambition bursts into opportunity - Innokite

A knowledge-intensive ecosystem is an interconnected network designed to turn knowledge into impact. It brings together students, researchers, entrepreneurs, universities, industry partners, incubators, investors, and public organizations to support the journey from idea → validation → startup → scale-up.

This article gives an overview of the northern startup ecosystem, and explains Innokite’s role within it—how it is structured; how it supports students, researchers, and early stage founders; and which tools are available to help you progress.

Key takeaways

  • A startup ecosystem connects students, researchers, founders, investors, and public institutions.
  • It supports the journey from idea → validation → startup → scale-up.
  • The knowledge-intensive startup ecosystem supports founders across three stages: Inspiration, Validation, and Scale-Up.
  • Different partners play distinct roles at each stage.
  • Innokite plays a central role in pre-incubation, founder development, and idea validation.

What makes a knowledge-intensive startup ecosystem work

A strong startup ecosystem works well when:

  • People think bigger and aim higher!
  • Connections between parties are good and seamless.
  • Founders always know the next step for their idea.
  • Dead ends are minimized through clear guidance and support.

Innovation thrives when support feels continuous, not fragmented. When founders have clear direction, strong community, and steady progress, their knowledge and ideas are more likely to turn into real innovation.

To better understand how these elements connect in practice, watch this short video about knowledge in entrepreneurial ecosystems.

What are the stages of the startup ecosystem

The startup ecosystem is formed by three main stages: Inspiration, Pre-Incubation & Pre-acceleration, and Acceleration Incubation & Scaleup Funding.

We have numerous players facilitating these phases, but Founded is one of Innokite’s main partners: they have a supporting role in every stage as the connector between different partners, keeping us all in line and (co)organising overarching events.

1. The inspiration phase

This phase is about exposure, curiosity, and first exploration. It’s where people begin to see entrepreneurship as a possible path.

What happens here:

  • Ecosystem connection and regional support tools
  • Inspiration funnel activities for students and researchers
  • Awareness of entrepreneurial opportunities and challenges

Founded facilitates much of the inspiration funnel, connecting partners and coordinating activities across the ecosystem.

Together with the other knowledge institutions, Innokite also supports students and researchers during this early exploration phase. We help northern startups in exceeding their goals so that they can become leaders in their market.

2. Pre-Incubation & Pre-Acceleration phase

This is where ideas start to become real projects. The two key players are Innokite and SBGG (Business Generator Groningen).

What does Innokite do during this phase?

Innokite acts as a single entry point for students, researchers and alumni. It provides:

  • Incubation space for co-creation and team forming
  • Expert mentorship accelerating validation
  • Domain specific training to develop business causes
  • Network connector for nascent Entrepreneurs

What does SBGG do at this stage?

  • Licensing for Spinouts
  • Business development for spin-in business cases
  • Technology Transfer office
  • Industry validation and knowledge valorisation

3. Acceleration Incubation, Scale up Funding phase

Once a startup is validated and ready to grow, the ecosystem supports rapid scaling.

What happens here:

  • Further support to prepare startups to scale up
  • (Pre)-Seed and Series A funding opportunities for startups
  • Specialised incubators like Healthy Aging Startup Incubator

Key partners in this stage include:

  1. BeStart: Helps sustainable tech startups scale quickly with a structured one-year acceleration programme.
  2. NOM: Provides funding support, helps you find the right business location, prepares your ideas for investors, and connects you with other entrepreneurs in innovative clusters.
  3. TechLeap: Empowers Dutch tech founders in scaling their companies, strengthening the entire tech ecosystem in the process.
  4. Future Tech Ventures: Provides capital, expertise and connections to take startups to the next level.
  5. University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG): Acts as a vital hub for entrepreneurs, offering support to transform health-related research into startups and products. It assists with business cases, intellectual property protection and access to funding.
The Startup Ecosystem in the Northern Netherlands

What is Innokite’s role in the ecosystem

Innokite works as part of a full ecosystem, supporting future founders and early stage startups from initial inspiration through idea validation, team formation, and preparation for creation and funding.

We connect founders to:

  • IP and licensing support via SBGG and the university IP team
  • Relevant partners across the ecosystem to support progress
  • Guidance for idea validation and team development
  • Preparation for the startup phase and funding readiness

Most startups need funding, and our approach is quite simple: we prioritise non-dilutive funding first (grants, programs, public funding) before exploring dilutive investments when appropriate.

In addition, we connect founders with other incubators and accelerators throughout the Netherlands to help them find the right place for their potential company to flourish.

How the Innokite program works

The program works very flexibly in the incubation phase. This isn’t another traditional classroom program.

Founders need to:

  • Take ownership of their progress
  • Ask for guidance when needed
  • Choose relevant business sessions

At Innokite, we provide structure, mentorship and community, but you have to lead your own development.

What tools we rely on

We have a few different tools we usually employ within our community, from Discord for our daily contacts, to Pitchbob and TEAMio for idea structuring and preparation.

Discord is Innokite’s core and digital community. It enables:

  • Daily interactions with peers and mentors
  • Access to community events
  • A space to ask questions and share progress, and find collaborators.

Pitchbob is a great tool we always recommend to our new-comers, when ideas are still fuzzy and evolving. It helps early-stage founders:

  • Clarify their problem, solution, customer and value proposition
  • Structure their idea in a clear and logical way
  • Prepare for conversations with mentors, partners, and investors
  • Build confidence in presenting their startup concept

TEAMio is a digital platform designed to support startup programs, incubators, and accelerators. It helps with:

  • Tracking startup progress, milestones, and mentor notes in one place
  • Structuring incubator programs —for example cohorts, sessions, and timelines
  • Collecting data for reporting, funding, and stakeholders
  • Connecting founders, mentors, and alumni

What are Innokite’s core principles

Innokite operates on clear community values:

  • Be bold — Don’t think small, ambition matters.
  • Give before you get — Don’t be transactional, be open to sharing first. Yet remember: this doesn’t mean always give if the other person doesn’t give back.
  • Practice radical honesty — Give fair but constructive feedback. Don’t fake enthusiasm but also don't be an ass!
  • Fail forward — Students don’t feel they can fail, academics often fear failure. Failure is learning to embrace it.
  • Encourage and empower — You’re a team and community co-creating. Help each other grow.
  • Default to inclusivity — This ecosystem is for everyone.
  • Take ownership — You control your progress. Not us, not others. Don’t want to be an entrepreneur: be one.
  • Iterate and improve continuously — Entrepreneurship is failure until it works, so take small steps and test things. Plan, Do, Check, Act.
  • Build community, not just companies — This is a positive amplifier for you! Active communities of entrepreneurs all go faster. Take time to learn from each other and to celebrate each other's successes.
  • Stay curious — Avoid tunnel vision, and be open to new ideas and perspectives.
